Does dark roast have more caffeine?

Ah, the great coffee debate! While it might seem like dark roast should pack a bigger punch, it actually has less caffeine per bean than light roast. The reason? The roasting process.

When coffee beans are roasted, they lose mass. Since dark roast beans are roasted longer, they become less dense, meaning each individual bean contains slightly less caffeine than a light roast bean. However, if you measure your coffee by scoop rather than weight, dark roast can seem stronger because the beans are larger and you’ll end up using more coffee.

So, if you're looking for the biggest caffeine boost, go for a light roast—but if you prefer that bold, smoky flavor, dark roast is the way to go.

Coffee, before the gym

Coffee can be a great pre-workout drink! The caffeine in coffee has been shown to boost strength, endurance, and alertness during exercise. Drinking coffee 45–60 minutes before a workout allows the caffeine to reach peak effectiveness.

Compared to pre-workout supplements, coffee is a natural and affordable option, though pre-workouts often contain additional ingredients like amino acids and vitamins. Some studies suggest that caffeine may even help burn more fat during exercise

How to brew the perfect cup.

There are so many ways to brew coffee, each bringing out different flavors and textures! Here are some popular methods:

French Press – Steep coarse coffee grounds in hot water for about 4 minutes, then press down the plunger. This method creates a rich, full-bodied coffee. The recommended ratio is 1:12, meaning 1 gram of coffee per 12 grams (or mL) of water. Here’s a quick guide:

  • 12 oz (350 mL) French press30 grams (4.5 tbsp) of coffee
  • 24 oz (700 mL) French press58 grams (8 tbsp) of coffee
  • 34 oz (1 L) French press85 grams (12 tbsp) of coffee

For a stronger brew, you can go for a 1:10 ratio, and for a lighter brew, a 1:15 ratio works well.

Pour Over – Slowly pour hot water over coffee grounds in a filter, allowing it to drip through. This method highlights bright, clean flavors. For pour-over coffee, a common ratio is 1:16, meaning 1 gram of coffee per 16 grams (or mL) of water. This ratio provides a balanced flavor, but you can adjust it based on your preference:

  • Stronger brew1:15 (more coffee, less water)
  • Milder brew1:17 (less coffee, more water)

AeroPress – Uses air pressure to push hot water through coffee grounds, creating a smooth, espresso-like coffee in under a minute. Brewing coffee with an AeroPress is quick and easy! Here’s a simple step-by-step guide:

  • Heat the water – Bring water to about 200°F (93°C). If you don’t have a thermometer, let boiling water sit for 30 seconds before using.

Prepare the filter – Place a paper filter in the AeroPress cap and rinse it with hot water to remove any paper taste.

Add coffee – Use 15–17 grams (about 2.5 tbsp) of finely ground coffee.

Pour water – Add 220 grams (about 7 oz) of hot water and stir gently.

Steep – Let the coffee sit for 1–2 minutes.

Plunge – Attach the plunger and press down slowly until you hear a hissing sound.

Enjoy! – Drink it as is, or add hot water for an Americano or milk for a latte.

Moka Pot – A stovetop method that brews strong, concentrated coffee by forcing steam through coffee grounds. Fill the base – Pour hot water into the bottom chamber up to the safety valve.

Add coffee – Fill the filter basket with medium-fine ground coffee (about 18–20 grams) and level it off without tamping.

Assemble the pot – Place the filter basket in the base and screw the top chamber on tightly.

Heat it up – Put the Moka pot on medium heat with the lid open. As the coffee starts flowing, reduce the heat.

Watch for the sputter – When the coffee starts bubbling and gurgling, remove the pot from heat.

Serve and enjoy – Pour the coffee into your cup and savor the rich, bold flavor.

Drip coffee maker

Using a drip coffee maker is simple and convenient! Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Add water – Pour fresh, cold water into the reservoir. Use filtered water for the best taste.

Insert the filter – Place a paper or reusable filter in the basket.

Add coffee – Use 2 tablespoons of medium-ground coffee per 6 oz of water. Adjust based on taste preference.

Start brewing – Press the brew button and let the machine do its work.

Wait for the drip to finish – Avoid interrupting the brewing process for the best flavor.

Serve and enjoy – Pour your coffee and drink it fresh! If your machine has a warming plate, don’t leave the coffee sitting too long—it can become bitter.

However your make your coffee, Caffeinated Squirrel Coffee can make the perfect cup!
